We booked on the California Zephyr from Chicago September 16, 2017 arriving Emeryville, CA on Monday, September 18. Booked a sleeper, which was very expensive.
We boarded in Chicago at 2:00 pm and at dinner we learned we were rerouted on freight tracks through Wyoming instead of the trip from Denver to Nevada through the Rocky Mountains. We booked this trip for the Rocky experience. However, Amtrak was repairing track in the Rockies and failed to contact passengers that the reason for booking the California Zephyr was no longer available. Hey Amtrak, have you ever traveled freight rails from Denver to California via southern Wyoming?
It was 12 hours of desert and dried dirt. Eliminating the part of this trip we paid top dollar to experience, not notifying us in advance of a known scheduled maintenance, blaming it on a Hurricane Irma in Florida, and boring us for 12 hours is very bold.
No faith in Amtrak to be truthful with route changes. This was a $2000.00 trip for a boring train ride in an uncomfortable sleeper.
