Amtrak ***!

I recently came to experience the worst customer service I have ever dealt with, or been witness to upon taking Amtrak on an excursion from Albuquerque to San Diego. It had been a number of years since I had taken the train and my past experience with Amtrak service was not nearly as memorable. While I do recall one or two surly attendants, I do not recall the kind of abusive, disrespectful and intimidating treatment of passengers, as I was witness to on this trip. Throughout the trip periodic announcements were made in the form of threats to passengers. Passengers were told in no uncertain terms what their fate would be if they did not abide by the rules. There was no please refrain from this or please refrain from that, but simply orders, like those given by the gestapo. Passengers were constantly warned that they would be left in the middle of nowhere if they did not abide by certain rules, and questions that would occasionally be raised were either ignored or replied to with a curt response. Passengers expressed that they felt more like prisoners than guests on the train and a contempt for passengers seemed to be shared by the entire crew. It was obvious to me that the crew's behavior is a projection of the company's customer service outlook and that their behavior is considered to be acceptable. Perhaps Amtrak with its low class and uneducated staff believes that there are few options for those of us who choose not to fly, or endure the hardship of bus travel, but the reality is that they are losing customers. I will never take Amtrak again and I am not alone in this decision, as complaints against the service continue to rise. I am more than willing to fight through my fear of flying or suffer the cramped quarters of a bus rather than experience another ride on the prison railroad.

Aaah, you are now a victim of Amtrak's latest hiring model. No care is given to the qualifications, or attitude of the persective candidate, only as to how they will fit into the prescribed employee 'census'.

I am guessing that they are hoping that it will not make much difference in the percieved quality of service. guess they might be wrong.

I am seeing this once potentially great passenger railroad going further into the abyss a little bit more each passing day.

As an employee on the NEC, I can also assure you that overall, the corporation considers any operations off of the corridors as simply a service that must be maintained by federal law, and not worthy of any large investments of funding, personel training, or care above survival mode. it's really that simple. They really don't care to offer any service, period.

Delayed 6 1/2 hours and won't compensate for lost tickets.

We took the auto train to Florida only to be delayed with engine trouble 6 1/2 plus hours. I called customer relations for compensation of the lost tickets to Kennedy Space Center. Customer relations what a joke. All they want to do is give me a voucher for future travel which is good for only one year. It takes me several years to save for this trip. Thanks to Amtrak I am now out $172.33. I will never use them again nor will I recommend them to anyone. Don't use Amtrak they are a rip off company.

haha you really don’t travel much do you? Amtrak has great customer relations compared to airlines.

Its not their job to be an insurance for your vacation, you need to be more responsible and mature in the event that delays happen.

By the way even them giving you a voucher for future travel is more then they have to do, all they need to do is get you to your destination, Amtrak did a great job, you on the other hand…. lets just say im glad you don’t have the money to travel much.

Sounds like what airlines do...why would you expect Amtrak to be any different? Its the travel industry; they tend to comp rather than refund, which is smart (from a marketing position)

I've taken the auto train from Lorton to Sanford many times and have never experienced a problem. However, your experience has made me very wiery about taking the auto train again because in the rare case you do lose power, you can't get off.

I hate to fly, but, I think I will *** my lip and fly to Florida next time.

Driving is not an option as it takes way to long and kids sitting in a car seat for that long is not a good idea.

Amtrack kills trees needlessly and with abandon

I am calling for a national boycott of Amtrack. They are using taxpayers' money to clear cut trees from Washington, DC to Boston without regard for citizens who live near the tracks and with no community forum or notification. Senator Peter Valone is speaking out against this in Woodside, Queens, NY. CBS calls this destruction "anything but green" and confirms the lack of community input. The trees beautified the area, provided a welcome berm from noise and vibration and were a home for wildlife. Are they not the same company that poisoned the areas around the tracks with agent Orange in the nineteen seventies?

Do Not Travel Amtrack!

My husband and I recently took a trip on amtrack thinking it would be an enjoyable way to travel. We were wrong! The food not only expensive but it was roughten but so was there help. Very rude, when we complained about the grease dripping off the vegetarian burger,a severe stomach ache with just two bites. The lady across the table from us got a salad with a roughten tomato and brown lettuce, on top of it, even though the waitress saw it, she chose to ignore it. The macaroni and cheese I think had been setting in the oven for a couple days, came out in chunks, had a hard time cutting it with a knife. The sandwiches, you couldn't *** through, and although they claimed to be :deli, had no condiments on them. chewing food as they handed out sandwiches, making announcements over the intercom, crunching away. For all the politicians talking about the infrastructure for the last twenty years, bridges are collasping and the rail is so uneven it nearly throws the cars off the track. I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital from whip lash. Needless to say the trip was a nightmare!

Yeah they are *** and do this on Oakland where we live as well. I think the conductor's ex-wife must be shacking up with her new boyfriend in our area hence the obnoxious overly excessive horn blaring where we are.

Amtrak, no announcement about electronic use with headphones

Enjoy taking Amtrak for travel to Atlanta and return trip to New York. Lately many passengers do not use headphones or ear pieces with video DVD players and was disturbing to me and other passengers. An adult watched her movie with sound up loud enough to be heard two seats back until 1:37 a.m.....March 25, 2010. If possible, could there be an announcement about the use of headphones with the use of DVD player(s) and any other electronic equipment aboard the train. The comfort of The Cressent makes the train ride my form of transportation enjoyable.

Railroad: as I have read and heard about the amtrac conductor who enjoys honking long and loud

I have heard and also experienced an Amtrak employee who gets great joy here himself hoking the horn of his engine especially in the wee hours of the morning. He seems to be known all down the line. He must have some problem that the railroad refuses to examine. I have to wonder about his motives considering he doesn't just do his honking in the intersections as you would think! I think everyone who is pissed should have his address and we will take turns honking during his sleep hours. All in favor say yeah!Amtrak please listen a!!!!!!!!

Amtrak *** in NYC

First and last time Amtrak traveler! Boarded train at Penn Station NYC, 1 1/2 hr later, train trip was cancelled, forced to spend another night in NYC. Unable to get on train the early AM, too full, ticketed for #43 which experienced (4) delays over almost 5 hour wait. Issued tickets on another train, forced to wait additinal 2 hours...all in all about 7 hours sitting & waiting! Amtrak gets an *** for their failure to keep travelers informed..when we begged for info, they were courteous. This mess the result of high wind, rains and downed wires related to train signaling in NJ. God awful backesd up mess! Info between what was posted on AMtrak on-line and what agents gave at Penn Station were never the same-HUGE GAP IN COMMUNICATION ACCURACY!!!! Terrible AMTRAK EXPERIENCE! NEVER AGAIN!

Between Boston and Washington Amtrak operates electric trains that draw their power from overhead wires. This began early in the last century because New York City will not allow diesel engines in the city at all.

Storms can cause the wires to break and that causes delays in travel.

However, weather related delays for planes are worse, much worse--they can be several days rather than hours. If you know how to change the weather Amtrak will be happy to use the information.

Amtrack Steals

Amtrack took four times out for one ticket. They yelled at us and were rude EVRYTIME we tried to call and get this fixed never give your Credit Card info to Amtrack they are thieves. They tried to blame the bank told me the Bank was lieing. After I got the bank to remove the excess charges yesturday Amtrack put them back on the three that were removed. Again I called got the rudest person once again Judy was bad enough yesturday. They must have to be a real Bxxxx to work there as EVERYONE we talked to was that way

Not the best, especially given the high price

I received unnecessarily rude and aggressive treatment from the conductors aboard the train from Boston to New York. I was settled in sitting on the left of the train and was using my laptop computer. When I tried to plug my power adapter into the sockets next to my seat, I discovered that none of the outlets on the left hand side in my car were functioning correctly. I therefore carefully ran a wire across the car to the outlets on the right hand side. I was careful to ensure that the wire was flat with the ground, and not a hazard. The train attendant soon stopped over and told me that this was a safety hazard and that I would have to move to the other side of the train. I had no problem with this, and began to gather my belongings to shift sides. However, I was treated in a rude and abrasive manner by the attendant and his colleague. They told me no fewer than 6 times in quick succession that I should cross to the other side, even though they could clearly see that I was already making preparations to move across. After about 10 seconds he yelled at me that he would "unplug my power adapter in 2 seconds" if I did not immediately comply with his request. This was unnecessary given that I had already started moving. I did not expect to be treated so rudely aboard an Amtrak train, especially given the high cost of the tickets and the expectations of high quality service that I therefore expect to receive aboard the train. Neither attendant expressed any interest in finding out why the outlets were not working, or fixing them. The names of the two train attendants that were rude to me were Kevin and Dave. I do not look forward to travelling on this Amtrak service again in future, and will be taking the bus, which not only has more pleasant staff but also offers working power outlets and WiFi.

Amtrak stole my money

I do not complain often, but I would be remiss if I didn't write this after the way I have been treated by Amtrak Two years ago my husband bought me $200 worth of gift certificates to take a trip from OKC to Ft Worth. Months after that, I discovered I could not reimburse these gift certificates because we did not have a train station located in OKC. This is a *** policy to begin with, why sell certificates to people if you can't use them from where you live? So, we finally reasoned with the company to send us a $200 voucher. We haven't had the money to take a trip since my husband lost his job shortly after that occurred but I have been saving the voucher. I wanted to give it as a gift for my in-laws for Christmas. I got it out only to find out it is expired. I called the company to see if there is anything I could do, even getting only half of my money back. After explaining the whole scenario, I was treated so rudely I broke into tears when I got off the phone. Not only, was she unsympathetic to my problem but she was curt, rude, and demeaning toward me.

I've not heard of Amtrak gift certificates, but from looking at the Amtrak web site, it seems they have to do with travel agents. It's odd that whoever you talked to didn't know that OKC had an Amtrak station.

Abandoned by Amtrak

I rode Amtrak from Kansas City to Houston a few years ago. On my return trip I arrived at the Oklahoma City train station at closing time (9-10pm). The Amtrak official kicked me out of the building, telling me I would have to wait on the curb outside for a bus that would come and take me the rest of the way. She then proceeded to unlock her car door and get in to go home. I asked her if she could wait until the bus arrived as I was traveling alone and was unfamiliar with Oklahoma City. She said no. I asked her what I was supposed to do if the bus did not show up, and told her I was uncomfortable being abandoned in downtown Oklahoma City late at night outside a deserted Amtrak station. She said "We have yet to come back in the morning and find the bones of a dead Amtrak customer on our steps. You'll be fine". She then got in her car and left. The street I was deserted on was dark as several of the lights in front of the train station were burned out and there was no one around except for a rare person walking by on foot and one other passenger that had been abandoned with me. She had been dropped off by family and was trying to catch the bus that was supposedly coming to pick us up in front of the Amtrak station. Fortunately, her family did not drive off and leave us like the rude Amtrak employees. They called Amtrak to find out what we were supposed to do when our bus still hadn't arrived an hour after our scheduled departure. Amtrak, of course, was not able to give us any information over the phone. We then called information and got the phone number of the nearest bus station and were told that our bus was actually at that station (several blocks away from the Amtrak station) and that we were expected to board the bus there since they were not driving by the Amtrak station to pick us up. The bus driver told me that she had had this problem with other Amtrak customers and that the Amtrak employees were wrongly telling them that the bus stopped at the Amtrak station to pick them up. I will never, ever travel with Amtrak again. Their employees are rude and have no problem abandoning a woman alone on a dark, deserted street so that they can get home a little quicker. They are not clear about the amount of bus riding that is involved with their train trips (and I assure you up to half of your trip will be by bus), and their stations are located in the nastiest, dirtiest part of every city I visited while I was on this hellish trip with them. I attempted to file a complaint with Amtrak after this happened, and I specifically wanted to mention the rude and completely inappropriate Amtrak employee in Oklahoma City but found their website to be lacking a customer comment area. I'm not surprised. Given the poor service I was shown on my trip, I'm certain they are not in any rush to allow other customers to post their Amtrak experiences as they will most likely be negative. If you value your time and safety at all, never ever ride with Amtrak.

Oklahoma City does not have an Amtrak Staff member at the station, the person who treated you rudely was likely a city employee who was assigned to provide information at the Station, and it's possible that since she didn't work for Amtrak, or work until the bus's departure time, she simpy was unaware that it called at a different stop.

That being said, how would you respond to someone asking you to wait around for a significant amount of time past the end of your shift just because they were uncomfortable, especially if they weren't technically YOUR customer?

Ban and issued Notice of Trespass for trying to purchase ticket

On 10/11/09 around 10:30 AM I was sitting in the Amtrak train station at 401 I Street when a security guard Supervisor walks up to me and asks me if I have a ticket. I said no, but I am going to purchase one. He says no you are not. I ask why are they not going to sell me a ticket? He said because I am going to tell them not to sell you a ticket because you are 86 out of the station. I go up to the ticket counter and ask to purchase a ticket. Mr. Andrews walks up behind me and tells the ticket clerk not to sell me a ticket because I have been 86 from the station. I told the clerk that Mr. Andrews did not have the authority restrict my travel liberty. That under the United States Constitution I could go anywhere I wanted and use any form of public transportation I wanted. The clerk told me she had to do what he asks. I told them they needed to call the police.The security guard told me and the clerk that it was the Amtrak police that told him to do it. Mr. Andrews gets on his cell phone and calls the Sacramento police but he does not make a normal emergency call. He tells the dispatcher my full name and that I had been 86 from the train station. The security guard has never ask me to see my ID but he knows all my information.The security guard has told me on occasions that he did whatever he was paid to do and didn't care what it was. I have gone to the Amtrak Station a number of times in the past and he would meet me down the street and ask me where I was going and did I have a ticket. When he calls the police, as he has done a couple of times in the past, he requests certain officers to respond to the station.I heard him one time repeatly request a certain officer to come to the train station.Two Sacramento police department officers respond to the train station.Security guard tells them I have been 86 from the station.They tell me to come outside. Outside I explain to them that I have committed no crime to be ban from riding the train. They tell me that this is private property and they can refuse service to anyone they want regardless of the reason and I need to leave. I told them that Amtrak was regulated by the federal government and subsidized and that it was a violation of federal law for them to discriminate in services to individuals. I requested the officers name and badge numbers. Officer 547 says since you want that I am going to give you a notice of trespass. He goes out to his car and writs me a notice of trespass, has Mr. Andrews sign it, gives it to me, and says if you come back on the property you will be arrested. The case number is 09-31****. I have a problem with the whole situation because they violated my constitutional rights on purpose. I explained to Amtrak personnel in the past that I was hyper sensitive to fragrances and colognes. If I am tired and someone comes around me with it on it will make my body produce more of a neuro transmitter called GABA that promotes sleep. It is a medical problem and I am legally disabled and need an accommodation for. The harassment at the train station stems from my legal actions in the federal court.Under the Fair Housing Act, American with Disabilities Act of 1990, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 no entity being subsidized or receiving federal money can discriminated in services or accommodation to any individual. Because Amtrak takes subsidies and is regulated by the federal government they are not legally totally private. They gave up that right when they accepted government aide. They fall within the jurisdiction of all the none discrimination clauses in all the federal laws. I have a cause of action that is totally in my favor. More so because I am disable. There is no way Amtrak can legally prevent me from using their services. The Sacramento police were just sent there to arrest or do what they did. How is an individual going to receive a notice of trespass for trying to purchase a ticket? The Security Guard told the police and the clerks that I purchased tickets and turned them back in without traveling. I explained to the guard a number of times about my situation and even told him he could take a look at my past trips on Amtrak. In the past two to three years I was up to around 180 transactions at the time all over the United States. This is not about me being at the train station or trespassing. This is about reprisal. In the United States I don't have to have a religion, I don't have to get married and can be single the rest of my life if I want, I don't have to join an organization, my liberty is not restricted, my communication is not restricted, and my access to the court is not restricted and I am entitled to bring any grievance I have for redress anywhere in the United States. If all of the items mention is restricted for me then by law they are restricted for everyone else also. A person's liberty can only be restricted for the commission of a crime, emergency, and in the best interest of public welfare. I don't fall in any of those categories. I am entitled to equal protection and due process.

Assigned handicap senior with reg passengers

My mother, 84 yrs old, boarded the train yesterday in Merced,Ca. at 9:00am. She entered the lower level of the train and they had to move passengers around to make room for her. I spoke to the female Amtrak attendant and asked her if she could be put into another car. Her sarcastic response was that the train was full and she cant be reassigned another seat. Prior to boarding, I asked the ticket agent if the train was full. He told me that they were not and there was a lot of room. I looked into another car and saw that they had a lot of room. My mother again asked the attendant if she could get another seat, and she responded very rudely, that she couldn't. I had no contact with my mother and only hoped that everything would be okay. When she got home, she was very distraught and said that she didn't want to ride the train again. My only complaint was about the conduct of your train attendant. I dont have her name, but she is short, little overweight, and Latino. Every effort should have been taken by her to accomodate our senior travelers. I hope she doesn't treat other travelers the same way. My mother felt that most of the travelers in the lower level, at the time, should have been moved upstairs. My mother travels on the Amtrak very frequently and now I have to figure another way to get her to visit me.

why did your mother think everyone should have been moved? so she could be alone? Its a public transportation service, there are always going to be crowded trains
