Amtrak - Train Service Review from Dousman, Wisconsin

Me and my 9 yr old son took a long trip from cali to chicago...some dude next to us on the train stuck a straw up his nose and began snorting some pill hed jus crushed up... My son was scared and freaked out..i was pissed.. I get up to find someone to talk to... The call for the conductor... No one comes... Finally asst. Conductor and a lady who works for amtrak comes.. Well, was he bothering you, this woman has the audacity to ask me if the dude snorting drugs next to me and my son is bothering me... Omg! Apparently they will lose their jobs if they approach the druggie... Apparently there is possibly a medication that ur supposed to crush and snort and they could lose their jobs if that's his medication...So hey anyone want to get high while Amtrak drives you around you should have no problems... I'll never use Amtrak again... Thanks Amtrak!

Yikes! If you are a regular traveler and looking for an alternate to air travel (as i WAS)...this is not it. Sure, you get more leg room...but you also get horrible interaction with conductor staff (specifically train 97, absolutely horrible customer service method). They apparently "assign" a seat as you board...and heaven forbid you move to an empty one, its the end of someones world...not sure if it comes from not being able to handle change or not wanting to deal with customers...in either case, I would argue its time to find new work.

Leaving Chicago to Mpls. First we were shuttled into a gate. Where we sat for 30 minutes. Then 62 years & younger had to walk to Great Hall and sit for 10 minutes (Gate B was not full and they were loading Seniors & people with kids). Then they walked us a half mile thru the station to the Train Track. WTH. Never happened in all the times I have been on this MPLs - Chicago train. Seemed random, AMTRAK staff were gruffly yelling at folks to Get their tickets out like we were in trouble. No one could hear anything. Really discouraging the poor, non friendly customer service. Then we get to train and there are 2/3 of the Seats marked for couples. As a single person who got to Station early......pissed me off and felt really discriminatory. This wasn't done when loading in Minneapolis and since no One said 'to the right of the stairs couples only' I had to fight my way back against the crowd to get a seat. Then dinner is $15-$26; only a hamburger from the dining car menu. What if vegetarian? Really frustrated. Calling my legislator when I get home.

This has been one of the worst travel experiences of my life. This sad excuse for a company has managed to turn a 5 1/2 HR train ride into an 11 HR stress fest. We sat motionless on the tracks at one point for 3 hrs. Constant stopping for no apparent reason with no explanation. Staff isn't so friendly either. I will never do business with this company again. You have ruined our sons birthday, thanks for that.

Traveling on an Amtrak the end of July this year our train collided, killed and severed the body of a pedestrian. Myself, daughter and grandmother were a on the train, not only did we feel the impact, smell the burn of the brakes, but we also saw the severed body. The whole incident was extremely traumatic for all of us. After I contacted amtrak to see if there was anything that they offer when something like that happens, and the passengers are now feeling anxious, depressed and suffering from PTSD. They opened a claim. My adjuster has been one of the hardest people to work with he has not been empathetic at all towArds us or the situation when I call in he acts like he has better things to do than deal with our problem. After getting nowhere with him I asked for his manager. Another mistake on my part, not only did I have to wait almost 16 minutes, she had me on speaker phone she was extremely unprofessional, short, rude, her demeanor was unempathetic and nasty. I asked for her manager she said she would not give it to me that she was the end of the line. Still no resolution with amtrak. I will Never travel with them again. They only care about your money once they have it you are on your own no matter what you experience during the ride. Shame on you amtrak!

PTSD? Really?!

You are clearly exploiting a tragedy to try to make a quick buck for yourself.

You don't need, (or deserve), money. What you really need is some morals.

Guest

Are you really serious? A CLAIM against Amtrak because a trespasser disregarded the train?

How is that Amtrak's fault?

You should receive NO compensation whatsoever, and that's whats always the case. I used to work for Amtrak and Im telling you now, they have an excellent legal department and its gonna backfire on you big time, they don't settle, they countersue

Guest

What a phony complaint! GROW UP!

You trying to get something out of somebody else being killed? Really?

You expect some service for someone's misfortune? Really?

Just took the train from Chicago to New York, the experience was not good starting at the union station. Workers and so called conductors were not well mannered and professional at all. They seemed to enjoy giving passenger a hard time with the tiny bit of power they have... But we all know it's amtrak and it's the last resort of some sorta. So let it be...and business as usual...

The worst customer service / relation ever. They are rude and not able to help you fix anything. The only thing they can say is "Unfortunately this is our policy". The website is not stable and you won't see your reservations / evouchers as current. They never care if the train is delayed, no apologies or any sort of compensation to make situations better. If I had other options travel, I would NOT choose Amtrak

Amtrak Conductor Claude A Robinson Calls Police Twice on This Old Lady

Amtrak Conductor Claude A Robinson Calls Police Twice on This Old Lady

While traveling from BWI to New York during the Christmas holiday a few years ago with my young daughter, I encountered an Amtrak conductor with what appeared to be arrogant, narcissistic, and low self esteem issues. My daughter politely asked Conductor Claude Robinson if she could leave our cart with our Christmas presents in an open area to which Conductor Claude Robinson rudely told her she could not. Conductor Claude Robinson told us to put the cart in the baggage nooks. Finally after a struggle, I managed to get the cart to fit horizontally in the cubby, Conductor Claude Robinson then said to me, "Oh, what a miracle".

Conducted Claude Robinson then proceeded to allow other incoming Amtrak passengers to keep their belongings in the same area that we could not. Huh?

My daughter and I then proceeded to sit at a table in the cafe car. After several minutes, Conductor Claude Robinson asked us to move to another table so that the cafe worker could sit there. We did.

Conductor Claude Robinson then proceeded to allow other incoming Amtrak passengers to sit at the same table that he had asked us to move from. Huh?

Now for the fun part. I started to use an electronic cigarette, having travelled Amtrak trains for several years using it in the presence of several Amtrak conductors, I did not know it was a problem. Conductor Claude Robinson called me over to where he was seated and asked me what I was doing. I explained to him that it was water vapor and went back to my seat. Conductor Claude Robinson then got up and walked over to me to tell me that I cold not use the electronic cigarette, which at this point was put away. I told Conductor Claude Robinson that I didn't know that and that I had put it away. He called me a liar and said that he was going to call the police to escort me and my daughter off of the train. I asked Conductor Robinson why he was harassing me. He just walked away.

Sure enough on the next stop, a New Jersey police officer entered my car; Conductor Claude Robinson had called the police. When I explained to the officer what had occurred, he refused to remove me and my daughter from the train.

Finally, arriving in New York, the train doors opened and there was AMTRAK police. One officer very tightly handcuffed me, threatened to call "social services" to come and pick up my daughter, and searched my pockets for identification.

My drivers license was given to Conductor Claude A Robinson, who was hiding behind the stairs. Conductor Robinson needed my information so that he could write his "cover my *** incident report for Amtrak. The AMTRAK police officer then removed the handcuffs.

In my opinion, Conductor Claude A Robinson should be given, at the minimum, a psychiatric evaluation and a drug test.

I knew this Amtrak Conductor to be named C. Robinson. I just recently found his photo on the internet, taken by a professional photographer citing his full name, Amtrak Conductor Claude A Robinson. My daughter and I recognized him immediately.

Not that it matters, as no one should be treated the way that I was, but I am a female doctor over the age of 50.

Thank you for your post and I'm so sorry for how you were treated. I experienced a very similar situation with Claude A. Robinson of Amtrak recently and just wrote a post detailing my story: https://amtrak.pissedconsumer.com/claude-a-robinson-disrespectful-inhumane-power-hungry-amtrak-conductor-201805****67241.html

I understand this is not a luxury train even in the sleeper section. I understand there will be delays. But I do not understand the horrific nasty dining car staff. They are rude and mean. I guess because you are held captive on the train, they are not required to be professional. They make constant announcements about not coming to the dining car unless you have a specific reservation, they make you share tables with strangers although if a train employee comes along that person is allowed a private table, they are slow and lazy and the food is poor quality.

Worst experience of my life

I took a train from California to Tennessee, there was a layover in New Orleans and I was told that i was under suspension of explosive while being detained for over 2 hours the police took my bags to another location and transported to the city lock up because of drugs. The arresting officer Det. Raymond DeVallee told me if I did not give him every guy in New Orleans drug trade that I would pay. Not a drug dealer and never have been to Louisiana I asked for a lawyer and was told not to drop the soap when I get to Angola i never went because the Judge saw that the case was a fraud and dismissed it, but it did NOT stop me from getting sexually assaulted and my money and property. I still have not been able to complain about this incident someone help me. Amtrak referred me to the cop who had this done to me and i was told go back to california before it starts over again singleturner562@***.com

On The Wrong Track

I recently embarked upon another Amtrak "loop". Cumberland roundtrip, departing on the Capital LTD to Chicago, the Cardinal to Alexandria and the Capital Ltd back to Cumberland. I have to save up for these trips and always travel in a sleeper for the overnight leg of the journey. It is how I spend my only vacation time each year. The decline in amenities and service from the trip last year-Capital Ltd/Crescent/City of New Orleans/ Capital Ltd is beyond belief. I was planning a western loop next year-Capital Ltd/California Zephyr/Coast Starlight/Empire Builder/ Capital Ltd. That is $4000.00 that is now going to be spent elsewhere. The Cardinal is one of the most expensive single routes on the Amtrak schedule. Hence it should be one of the best. Not so. $700.00 for a bedroom(1 night), for this???? The Café Car served hot meals. One server for 24 people per seating. Not only was he the server, but he had to prepare (microwave) the meals as well. $25.00 for a nuked entrée??? Granted, meals are include for sleeping car passengers, but still??? Needless to say there was no customer satisfaction. That was not due to the young man, as he was quite obviously doing his level best in an untenable situation. Bring back the Dining Car with an adequate staff and decent meals. The food and staffing on the Capital Ltd was no better What do the mental midgets in charge think people travel long distance on Amtrak for? The baby boomers are a huge target market with the time and money to indulge their nostalgia for a bygone era that Amtrak once provided. Now they charge five star prices for negative one star experience. The amenities in the sleepers have gone from adequate hotel style to a basic interstate rest stop variety. On both the Capital Ltd and the Cardinal I was told that water for sleeping car passengers is now rationed. Unbelievable!! I had to intended to continue to work on my bucket list of doing all of the Amtrak loops. I have now decided to savor my memories of the way it was and spend my money more intelligently in future.

The problem is not Amtrak, it is the congressional cuts in funding. While subsidies for airlines and highways soar, those for Amtrak continually diminish. More people are travelling Amtrak than ever before, but the war on trains by certain members of Congress has resulted in less support than ever.
